Questioning

Have you ever taken a journalism class? A basic composition writing course? Even without those, many of you are likely still familiar with the “Journalism Questions”: who, what, when, where, why, and how.

Now that you are here and thinking about these questions, here are some additional ones to ponder: What do you need to question? Your idea? Your plot? One of your characters?

How about you start with an image?

Find an image (or perhaps browse online on sites like Freepix) and interview it.

  • Who is in the picture? Or if no one is in the picture, where are the people?

  • What are they doing (or where did they go if they are not there)? What is going on in the background?

  • When was this picture taken/drawn? How can you tell?

  • Where do you think this picture was taken? Or what type of place is the picture trying to depict?

  • Why did someone take this particular picture or draw this particular image?

  • How is it composed? How did the events in the picture happen? How do you know what you “know” about the image?

  • Etc.?

Where can you go from here?

13 - Do you want to roll a character?

14 - Do you need something from the “Junk” drawer?

16 - Did you find a location to explore?
