Visualize

Many different paths may have brought you to this page, or you may have gone rogue and jumped straight to it, you rebel! However you ended up here, let’s think a bit more about utilizing visualization techniques during the creation process.

Visualizing can involve simply creating a mental image of something you want to create or manifest. Visualizing could also mean physically creating that image whether with words, drawings, or other artistic endeavors. Visualization can have a great deal of reflective and metaphoric power. Think about vision boards!

Here are some other ideas you could try:

  • Do you want to try and draw an actual picture of your character? No artistic skill is required or will be judged! How about drawing the setting of your story?

  • Have you ever created a Venn Diagram? This is a great way to compare and contrast ideas; to see where they overlap and diverge

  • How about using visuals to revise? You may have been to the page where I discussed using presentation software to create a visual but you can also use this as a revision technique. If you are stuck in a revision, maybe try to plot out your idea with a presentation or other visual format (think even of storyboards!) and see if you like where your ideas are heading

Think some of these suggestions are C.R.A.P.? Then maybe you want to learn a bit more about the basic principles of graphic design: contrast, repetition, alignment, and proximity.

So what is next?

21 - Look around the Gutter?

25 - How about trying out more detailed writing prompts (some with further visual angles)?
